Airbnb Bans Checkout Chores From November 20: What Guests Need to Know

Airbnb Bans Checkout Chores: New Rules for Guests and Hosts Starting November 20

Airbnb is introducing new rules that will make checking out of vacation rentals easier for guests. From November 20, 2026, hosts will no longer be allowed to require guests to complete time-consuming cleaning tasks, such as stripping beds, washing and putting away dishes, or taking rubbish off-site.

The policy change addresses growing complaints from travellers who have been asked to perform extensive cleaning duties despite paying cleaning fees for their accommodation. Airbnb says the updated rules will make house expectations clearer and prevent guests from facing unexpected chores at the end of their stays.

The new policy applies to reservations made on or after November 20, 2026, including eligible Airbnb bookings in Australia and other markets covered by the platform's rules.

Which Airbnb Checkout Chores Are Now Banned?

Under the revised policy, Airbnb hosts cannot require guests to complete tasks that involve significant time or effort or would normally be handled by professional cleaners.

The prohibited checkout tasks include:

  • Stripping beds: Guests cannot be required to remove used bed sheets and linens before leaving.
  • Washing and putting away dishes: Hosts can ask guests to place used dishes in the sink, but cannot require them to wash and store everything.
  • Starting laundry: Guests cannot be required to begin a load of laundry as a checkout condition.
  • Taking rubbish off-site: Hosts cannot generally require guests to transport rubbish away from the property as part of checkout chores.

These restrictions are intended to establish more consistent expectations for travellers, particularly those who have already paid a cleaning fee.

Airbnb's updated policy focuses on preventing excessive cleaning demands rather than allowing guests to leave a property in any condition they choose.

What Can Airbnb Hosts Still Ask Guests to Do?

Although extensive checkout chores are being restricted, hosts can continue to make reasonable requests that help keep their properties in good condition.

For example, guests may still be asked to:

  • Place used dishes in the sink.
  • Gather used towels in one place.
  • Sort rubbish and recycling into designated indoor bins.
  • Follow reasonable instructions for securing the property when leaving.

Certain exceptions may also apply in specific circumstances, such as putting rubbish into wildlife-proof containers in areas where bears are present or following relevant local water-conservation requirements.

The central principle is that checkout requests should remain practical and proportionate. Guests are still expected to treat the accommodation responsibly, avoid damage, and follow legitimate house rules.

Airbnb Cleaning Fees Will Not Be Removed

The policy change does not mean Airbnb is eliminating cleaning fees.

Hosts can continue setting their own cleaning fees, which may cover standard turnover tasks such as changing linens, vacuuming, and preparing the property for the next guest.

However, Airbnb's revised rules clarify that hosts cannot charge guests a fee simply because they failed to complete a prohibited checkout chore.

This distinction is particularly important for travellers who have complained about paying substantial cleaning charges while also being expected to clean the accommodation themselves.

The updated policy aims to make the relationship between cleaning fees and guest responsibilities more transparent, although the actual amount charged can still vary between properties.

Airbnb Hosts React to the New Policy

The announcement has generated mixed reactions among property owners.

Many guests have welcomed the change, arguing that vacation rentals should not require extensive cleaning work immediately before departure. Some travellers have also questioned why they should pay separate cleaning fees while being asked to complete tasks normally handled by cleaners.

However, some hosts have criticised the restrictions. Smaller operators who clean their own properties may need to spend more time preparing accommodation between bookings or hire outside cleaning services.

Some hosts have warned that these additional expenses could lead to higher accommodation prices. Others have suggested that they may reconsider their participation on the platform.

The disagreement highlights the challenge of balancing a convenient guest experience with the costs and responsibilities involved in managing short-term rental properties.

Airbnb Is Also Making House Rules Easier to Find

Alongside the checkout chore restrictions, Airbnb is standardising how hosts communicate important house rules.

The platform is organising rules into clearer categories, including check-in and checkout arrangements, maximum overnight occupancy, smoking, pets, quiet hours, events, and restrictions on commercial photography.

Hosts must disclose applicable rules and requests in the designated listing section before guests book. They cannot simply introduce new checkout requirements through messages or signs after a reservation has been made.

Airbnb can flag requests that do not comply with its policy and ask hosts to amend them. Listings may face warnings or more serious consequences if violations remain unresolved.

The goal is to help travellers understand what is expected before paying for a reservation, rather than discovering additional obligations just before departure.

How the New Airbnb Rules Affect Travellers

For guests, the updated policy should make checkout simpler and reduce uncertainty about cleaning responsibilities.

Travellers should still review a property's listing before booking, check the stated checkout time, and follow reasonable instructions. They should also report excessive or prohibited cleaning demands through Airbnb's official support channels if necessary.

Hosts, meanwhile, should review their existing checkout instructions and update listings to comply with the new requirements.

The changes are particularly relevant for families, business travellers, and holidaymakers who prefer short-term rentals but do not want to spend the final part of their stay completing a long list of household chores.

Final Thoughts

Airbnb's new checkout policy marks a shift toward simpler and more transparent expectations for vacation rental guests. From November 20, 2026, hosts will be restricted from demanding extensive cleaning tasks such as stripping beds, washing dishes, starting laundry, or taking rubbish off-site.

Cleaning fees will remain, and guests will still be responsible for treating properties appropriately. However, the updated rules aim to ensure that ordinary cleaning work is not unfairly transferred to travellers.

Whether the change will increase operating costs for hosts or improve the overall booking experience remains to be seen. For now, guests and property owners should review Airbnb's updated policies before making reservations or changing their checkout procedures.
