In a significant stride towards digital inclusivity, Pakistan is championing the empowerment of women through technology. The recent “Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation” event, organized by the Universal Service Fund (USF), underscored the nation’s commitment to integrating women into its digital landscape.

“Smartphones for All” Initiative: A forthcoming policy aimed at providing smartphones and internet access to every household, with a particular focus on empowering women through digital tools.

Infrastructure Development: Completion of 161 projects, installation of over 4,400 mobile towers, and laying of more than 17,200 kilometers of optical fiber, bringing digital services to 37 million people.

Budget Allocation: An approved budget of PKR 23 billion for USF to expand digital access in rural and remote areas.

Support for Women in Tech: Initiatives to assist women, startups, freelancers, and social media influencers, ensuring they are integral to the digital age.

Educational Programs: Distribution of over 1.2 million laptops to students and the DG Skills Program, which has provided online freelancing training to 4.5 million individuals.
Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja emphasized the importance of creating equal opportunities for women and addressing societal attitudes that hinder their progress. She highlighted that the lack of a fair environment for half of the population impedes the country’s overall development.
USF CEO Chaudhry Mudassar Naveed announced the completion of new field and technical work, with tenders issued for 16 new projects across 20 districts in all four provinces.
This event marked a celebration of progress and a call to action for continued efforts towards digital inclusion, ensuring that women are not left behind in Pakistan’s digital transformation.
