PlayStation 6 Could Be Extremely Expensive

Sony’s next-generation gaming console, the PlayStation 6, could be considerably more expensive than previous PlayStation consoles if current hardware cost estimates are accurate.

A recent report claims that the estimated bill of materials (BOM) for the PS6 has climbed to around $960, following a sharp increase in the cost of key components. The estimate comes from hardware leaker KeplerL2, who previously suggested that the console’s component cost was around $760.

If the reported figure is accurate, it could create a major challenge for Sony when deciding the retail price of the PlayStation 6.

PS6 Manufacturing Costs Could Reach $960

The reported $960 figure refers to the estimated cost of components rather than the final retail price of the console. Manufacturing expenses are only one part of the total cost of bringing a gaming console to market.

Sony would also have to account for assembly, packaging, transportation, marketing, retail costs and other expenses. That means a console with a $960 component cost would be extremely difficult to sell at a price significantly below that amount without Sony absorbing substantial losses. 

The situation has reportedly been made worse by rising prices for memory and other computer components.

Why Could the PS6 Be So Expensive?

One major factor is the continuing pressure on the global memory and semiconductor supply chain. Demand from artificial intelligence companies has increased competition for advanced chips and memory, pushing up hardware costs.

The problem isn't limited to Sony. Gaming hardware prices have already increased across the industry, with current-generation consoles and other gaming devices becoming more expensive. 

For Sony, this could make the PlayStation 6 particularly difficult to price competitively.

Could the PS6 Cost Around $1,000?

A $960 component estimate does not automatically mean the PlayStation 6 will launch at $960 or $1,000.

However, it explains why a PS6 price approaching four figures is being discussed. Some earlier industry speculation has already suggested that the main PS6 could potentially fall somewhere between $699 and $999, although those figures remain unconfirmed.

Sony itself has not finalized the official PS6 price. Sony executives previously indicated that component shortages and increasing costs were factors in determining the timing and pricing of its next-generation hardware. 

PS6 Could Be Much More Expensive Than the Original PS5

The original PlayStation 5 launched at $499.99 for the disc version in 2020. A PS6 approaching the $1,000 mark would therefore represent a dramatic increase compared with the previous generation.

That could make the next-generation PlayStation a difficult purchase for many gamers, particularly when buyers also need to budget for games, additional storage and accessories.

At the same time, Sony could potentially choose to absorb some hardware costs, reduce specifications, introduce different PS6 models or wait for component prices to become more favorable before launching the console.

PS6 Release Date and Price Are Still Unconfirmed

Sony has not officially revealed the final PlayStation 6 design, retail price or launch date. Current reports have pointed toward a next-generation PlayStation arriving around 2027 or later, but component shortages could affect Sony's plans. 

For now, the reported $960 manufacturing estimate should be treated as a leak rather than an official Sony figure.

If hardware costs remain high, however, gamers could be facing a very different PlayStation generation—one where the PS6 potentially costs far more than the PS5 did at launch.
