GTA 6 Wanted System Makes Losing the Police More Difficult

GTA 6 Makes Losing the Police Harder With a New Wanted System

Rockstar Games is giving the police system in Grand Theft Auto 6 a major overhaul, making it much harder to simply drive around a corner, hide for a few seconds and watch the wanted stars disappear.

The upcoming game introduces a more sophisticated system in which law enforcement can collect information about suspects, including their appearance, clothing, vehicle and even whether Jason and Lucia are traveling together.

Instead of simply being "wanted," players can effectively become hunted.

GTA 6 Brings Back Six Wanted Stars

The familiar wanted-star system returns in GTA 6, but Rockstar is expanding it to six stars.

The system is more dynamic than the one seen in GTA 5. Police response depends not only on the crime itself but also on how much information law enforcement has about the suspect.

A crime must first be witnessed or reported before police are alerted. This means players can sometimes commit an offense and escape before authorities have enough information to identify them.

As crimes become more serious, the police response can escalate dramatically.

Police Can Remember What You Look Like

One of the biggest changes is that police don't simply know the player's location.

They can collect information about:

  • Character appearance
  • Clothing
  • Vehicles
  • Weapons
  • CCTV footage
  • Whether Jason and Lucia are together

This creates a more believable pursuit system because changing your appearance or vehicle can actually make a difference during an escape.

For example, if police identify the car being used during a robbery, abandoning that vehicle could make it more difficult for them to continue tracking the player.

Changing Clothes Can Help You Escape

In previous GTA games, changing clothes was mostly a cosmetic feature. GTA 6 gives clothing a more practical role during police pursuits.

If law enforcement has information about what a suspect is wearing, changing clothes can potentially remove some of the information they have.

This means escaping a high-level pursuit may require more planning than simply finding a fast car.

Players could potentially:

  1. Leave the crime scene.
  2. Abandon the getaway vehicle.
  3. Change clothing.
  4. Separate Jason and Lucia.
  5. Move away from the area.
  6. Avoid returning to a location where police are still searching.

The result is a much more involved cat-and-mouse experience.

Jason and Lucia Can Split Up

Another interesting element is the relationship between the two protagonists.

Police can recognize that Jason and Lucia are together, meaning staying together during a pursuit can make them easier to identify.

Splitting up can therefore become a useful escape strategy.

Rockstar has explained that the police can take the pair's presence into account when searching for suspects.

This could also create new gameplay opportunities during robberies and other criminal activities.

CCTV Adds Another Layer

Security cameras are another important part of the new system.

In GTA 6, police can potentially use CCTV footage as part of their investigation. That means simply breaking the line of sight of a police car doesn't necessarily mean you're safe.

If a camera captured your appearance or vehicle, investigators may still have useful information after you leave the immediate area.

This makes the game world feel more persistent than previous GTA titles.

You May Need to Escape on Foot

Rockstar has also designed GTA 6's cities to make escaping on foot a viable option.

In busy areas, driving through traffic while being pursued can become difficult. Players may have better luck abandoning their vehicle and moving through alleys, fences and other areas where police vehicles cannot easily follow.

Rockstar's Rob Nelson explained that the team put considerable effort into making movement through the world smooth enough to encourage this kind of escape gameplay.

That means a getaway could involve much more than simply driving a supercar at maximum speed.

The Crime Scene Can Stay Hot

Another major change is that escaping the immediate police chase doesn't necessarily mean everything is forgotten.

Certain areas can remain "hot" after a crime.

Returning to the same location too quickly could put the player back on the police's radar. This gives players a reason to stay away from the crime scene until the situation has cooled down.

The result is a system that encourages players to think about where they escape to—not just how quickly they can get there.

Violence Can Make Things Much Worse

GTA 6 also appears to give players more control over how much a criminal situation escalates.

According to Rockstar, players can sometimes commit a crime and leave without dramatically escalating the situation. However, unnecessary violence can increase the severity of the response.

This fits Rockstar's broader goal of giving players more choices during criminal encounters.

A player who wants to keep things relatively quiet can try to escape quickly, while another player can turn the same situation into a massive police battle.

GTA 6 Adds a Criminal Profile

The wanted system also works alongside a new Criminal Profile system.

Rather than simply tracking how many crimes the player has committed, the system can reflect the type of criminal behavior being performed.

Rockstar says this system was inspired in part by the way Red Dead Redemption 2 tracked player behavior, although GTA 6 isn't simply trying to reward players for being good or punish them for being bad.

The idea is to make criminal behavior feel more connected to the wider game world.

GTA 6 Is Making Police Chases More Strategic

The biggest change is that escaping police now appears to require actual strategy.

In older GTA games, players could often rely on memorized hiding spots, fast vehicles or simply driving far enough away from the search area.

GTA 6 adds more variables.

Players need to think about:

What do the police know?

What vehicle are they looking for?

What am I wearing?

Did CCTV capture me?

Am I traveling with Lucia or Jason?

Should I leave the area or hide nearby?

These decisions could make police chases significantly more unpredictable.

GTA 6 Wants Players to Feel Hunted

Rockstar's approach could make GTA 6's wanted system one of the most advanced criminal pursuit systems in the series.

Instead of treating police as enemies that simply spawn after a crime, the game appears to give law enforcement a more persistent understanding of what happened.

The result should make escaping feel less like a game mechanic and more like an actual chase.

Final Thoughts

GTA 6 is changing the way players lose the police.

The return of six wanted stars is familiar, but the new systems surrounding them are much more sophisticated. Police can track clothing, vehicles, appearances, CCTV footage and the connection between Jason and Lucia.

Players will have more ways to escape, but they'll also need to think more carefully about their actions.

With GTA 6 scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, Rockstar appears determined to make its next-generation open-world crime experience more immersive than ever.
