HMD Reportedly Plans to Exit Some Markets and Reduce Global Smartphone Production

HMD, the company behind HMD-branded smartphones and Nokia-branded feature phones, could be preparing for a major change in its global smartphone strategy.

According to a new report from a source known for HMD-related leaks, the Finnish company is reportedly planning to withdraw from selected markets and reduce production across its global device portfolio. The company is also said to be shifting its focus toward regional markets and enterprise and industrial customers.

However, there is an important caveat: HMD has not officially confirmed these plans, so the information should currently be treated as a rumor.

HMD Could Reduce Its Global Smartphone Presence

The latest leak suggests that HMD may no longer pursue the same broad global smartphone strategy it has followed in recent years.

Instead, the company could concentrate more heavily on selected regional markets, while reducing the number of devices it produces for worldwide distribution.

The report also claims that HMD may not introduce any more globally launched products during the remainder of 2026. Future devices could instead be introduced on a market-by-market basis.

This would represent a significant change for HMD, which has attempted to build a presence across multiple international smartphone markets.

Enterprise and Industrial Markets Could Become More Important

Another part of the reported strategy involves greater emphasis on the enterprise and industrial sectors.

Rather than relying primarily on consumer smartphones, HMD could increase its focus on business customers and specialized devices.

Such a strategy would allow the company to target areas where long-term device support, security and specialized hardware can be more important than competing for mass-market smartphone sales.

HMD Has Already Reduced Its Presence in Some Markets

The latest rumor comes after HMD has already made changes to its operations in certain regions.

In July 2025, HMD announced that it was scaling back its US operations, citing a challenging geopolitical and economic environment. The company said at the time that it would continue honoring warranties and supporting existing customers.

There have also been more recent changes in parts of Europe. A September 2026 report found that HMD's websites in Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands were no longer listing smartphones, although feature phones remained available. The change was linked to patent-related legal action involving AAC technology.

These developments don't prove the latest rumor, but they show that HMD's international smartphone business has already been undergoing changes.

What About Nokia Phones?

HMD has been the company responsible for producing and selling Nokia-branded mobile phones in recent years.

A reduction in HMD's global smartphone operations could therefore affect the availability of future Nokia-branded devices in some markets. However, the latest rumor specifically concerns HMD's overall device strategy, and it does not provide a definitive list of countries that could be affected.

For existing Nokia and HMD phone owners, a market withdrawal would not automatically mean that their devices would stop working.

HMD's Feature Phone Business Faces a Different Challenge

HMD continues to sell feature phones, including Nokia-branded models. These devices remain important to the company, but the long-term market is challenging as consumers increasingly depend on smartphones.

The company has also been developing devices beyond traditional consumer smartphones, including products aimed at specialized and enterprise markets.

HMD's official newsroom continues to highlight its ambitions for 2026 and its feature-phone business, indicating that the company remains active despite the reported restructuring rumors.

No Official Confirmation Yet

At this stage, there is no official confirmation from HMD that it will withdraw from specific markets or stop global product launches.

The leaked information should therefore not be interpreted as an announcement that HMD is leaving the smartphone industry.

The company could also change its strategy before any of the reported plans become final.

What This Could Mean for HMD

If the report turns out to be accurate, HMD could be moving away from competing for a broad share of the global consumer smartphone market.

A more regional and enterprise-focused strategy could allow the company to reduce manufacturing and distribution costs while concentrating resources on markets where it sees stronger opportunities.

For consumers, however, the change could mean fewer HMD smartphones being launched in some countries and longer waits for new models.

Final Thoughts

HMD may be preparing for a significant restructuring of its global smartphone business. The company is reportedly considering withdrawals from selected markets, lower global device production and a stronger focus on regional, enterprise and industrial customers.

For now, this remains an unconfirmed rumor. HMD has not announced which markets could be affected, and there is no official confirmation that global launches will stop.

More details should become available if HMD responds to the report or announces changes to its 2026 product strategy.
