Xiaomi is preparing to introduce a new foldable phone with a major memory upgrade. The upcoming Xiaomi 18 Fold is expected to become the first smartphone to use CXMT’s new LPDDR6 memory technology.

Chinese memory maker CXMT has confirmed that its LPDDR6 memory has entered mass production. The company shared the news on Weibo and revealed that Xiaomi will use its new memory in an upcoming device. Xiaomi founder Lei Jun also confirmed the partnership.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold is expected to launch in September. It will combine CXMT’s LPDDR6 memory with Xiaomi’s new Xring O3 flagship processor. The same processor and memory combination is also expected to appear in the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max.

Xiaomi 18 Fold to Become First Smartphone With CXMT’s New LPDDR6 Memory

LPDDR6 is the successor to LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X. The new memory standard is designed to offer higher bandwidth while also improving power efficiency.

CXMT’s version is expected to run at 10,667 MT/s when paired with the Xring O3 processor. It can reportedly reach speeds of up to 12,800 MT/s, while the full LPDDR6 standard supports data rates of up to 14,400 MT/s.

The memory also uses a wider 24-bit interface. This can increase data throughput compared with LPDDR5X. Higher bandwidth could be particularly useful for demanding tasks such as artificial intelligence features, gaming and graphics processing.

Xiaomi 18 Fold Could Pack High-End Hardware

The Xiaomi 18 Fold is expected to be more than just a showcase for new memory technology. Previous leaks have suggested that the foldable could feature a 7.6-inch display and a 6,000mAh battery.

The phone is also rumored to support wireless charging and feature a 200MP main rear camera. Xiaomi has not yet confirmed all of these specifications, so more details could emerge before the launch.

The Xring O3 will be another important part of the device. Xiaomi recently introduced the processor as its latest flagship mobile chip. It is manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process.

CXMT Takes a Major Step

The Xiaomi 18 Fold could give CXMT an important opportunity to demonstrate its latest memory technology in a flagship consumer device. Xiaomi’s use of LPDDR6 also highlights the growing demand for faster memory as smartphones handle more AI and graphics workloads.

Other flagship platforms are also expected to adopt LPDDR6. Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is reportedly being prepared for the new memory standard, although it is expected to use memory supplied by companies such as SK Hynix, Samsung or Micron.

For now, Xiaomi appears set to be among the first major smartphone makers to bring LPDDR6 to consumers. If the Xiaomi 18 Fold launches as expected in September, it could become an important milestone for both Xiaomi and CXMT.
