Xiaomi has confirmed that the Xiaomi 18 Pro display will use an upgraded Super Pixel 2.0 panel, with privacy protection built into the hardware. The company says the screen pairs top-tier picture quality with the new privacy layer.

This is the first time Xiaomi has officially acknowledged the privacy feature. Reports of a Samsung-style privacy display on its next flagship first appeared in June.

The announcement comes two days before the launch event on September 23, which starts at 19:00 China time (4:00 pm in Pakistan).

What is new in the Super Pixel 2.0 display

Xiaomi lists four upgrades: an M11 light-emitting system, a new green light-emitting material, a full RGB pixel arrangement and hardware-level privacy protection.

The company says the green material improves luminous efficiency by 20 percent. Peak brightness is rated at 4,000 nits.

A nit is the unit for screen brightness. Peak figures usually describe short bursts, such as bright highlights, rather than what the screen delivers all day.

Xiaomi says the full RGB layout keeps pixels sharp without losses. Many OLED phones share sub-pixels between neighbouring pixels to save space. A full RGB layout gives each pixel its own red, green and blue sub-pixels.

By Xiaomi’s account, the panel uses about as much power as a 1.5K display while matching the clarity of a 2K one. A 1.5K screen has fewer pixels to drive, which is why it normally draws less power.

Xiaomi also said on September 20 that a new screen packaging process cuts the bezels to 0.99mm. The launch poster lists five key features that apply to both the 18 Pro and the 18 Pro Max, so both phones share the same display technology.

Battery size is the main difference between the two: 7,000mAh on the Pro and 8,500mAh on the Pro Max.

What we know about the privacy feature

Xiaomi has not explained how its hardware-level privacy protection works. The term usually means the panel itself limits how readable the screen is from the side, rather than software blurring or dimming the image. Xiaomi has not said which approach it uses.

An August leak offered a look at the software side. The feature, called Smart Privacy Display, would let users create groups of apps and set different privacy display settings for each group. A banking app could use privacy mode while a video app does not.

The leak also describes automatic activation for four types of content: password entry, payments, fund transfers and messages. Xiaomi has not confirmed any of these details.

According to Sammy Fans, the leaked settings came from a Global ROM. That suggests the option exists in international firmware, but it does not confirm that phones sold outside China will get the panel.

What to expect on September 23

Xiaomi has already confirmed a 2nm chip and a Leica camera system with two 200MP sensors for the series. It has not named the chip. The launch also falls inside Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, which runs from September 22 to 24.

The event is expected to bring full specifications, pricing and availability. Xiaomi has not said whether the new display and its privacy features will be sold outside China.

Xiaomi has given figures for brightness and efficiency but nothing on how the privacy layer works or what it does to image quality when it is on. Those two answers will decide whether the feature is a real selling point or a line on a spec sheet. Reviews after launch will show which.
