Proton Drive Review: Is This the Best Private Cloud Storage for Your Files?

Cloud storage has become an essential part of everyday digital life. People use online storage to back up photos, documents, videos, work files and other important data. However, privacy and security have become just as important as storage capacity.

Proton Drive is designed for users who want cloud storage with a stronger focus on privacy. Developed by the team behind Proton Mail and Proton VPN, the service uses end-to-end encryption to protect stored files and gives users control over how their data is shared.

What Is Proton Drive?

Proton Drive is a secure cloud storage platform that allows users to upload, store, synchronize and share files online. The service is available through the web as well as Windows, macOS, Android and iOS/iPadOS applications.

Unlike conventional cloud storage services where privacy may not be the primary selling point, Proton Drive is built around encrypted storage. Proton says files are encrypted on the user's device before they are uploaded, meaning Proton itself cannot access the contents of end-to-end encrypted files.

Proton Drive Offers End-to-End Encryption

The biggest reason to consider Proton Drive is its approach to security.

Files, filenames and folder names stored in Proton Drive are protected with end-to-end encryption. Proton's support documentation says this encryption takes place before the data leaves the user's device.

This means your files are not simply protected while being transferred. The stored data is also designed so that Proton does not have the keys required to decrypt your encrypted content.

For people storing sensitive documents, personal photos or important work files, this additional layer of privacy can be particularly useful.

5GB Free Cloud Storage

Proton Drive provides a free plan with 5GB of cloud storage. The free tier includes encrypted storage for photos and documents along with access to Proton's online document and spreadsheet tools.

Five gigabytes may be enough for basic document backups and a selection of photos, but users with large video collections or extensive backups will likely need a paid plan.

Proton also offers larger storage plans for people who need more space. Current options listed by Proton include Drive Plus with 200GB and larger bundles that combine storage with other Proton services.

Secure File Sharing

Proton Drive isn't only designed for keeping files in your own account. You can also share files and folders with other people using shareable links.

According to Proton, users can add password protection and expiration dates to shared links, giving them more control over who can access shared content and for how long.

This can be useful when sharing private documents, photographs or large files without permanently giving someone access to your entire cloud account.

Photo Backup and Albums

For smartphone users, Proton Drive can also be used to protect photos and videos.

The service supports automatic mobile photo backups and albums, allowing users to keep important memories stored in their encrypted cloud account.

This makes Proton Drive more than a traditional document-storage service. It can also act as a private backup location for personal photographs and videos.

Access Your Files Across Devices

Proton Drive supports multiple platforms, making it possible to access your files from different devices.

Users can manage their files through the web or dedicated applications for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS/iPadOS. Proton also supports desktop synchronization, allowing files to remain synchronized between a computer and cloud storage.

This cross-platform support is important for users who regularly move between smartphones, laptops and desktop computers.

Proton Drive Is Built Around Privacy

Privacy is one of Proton Drive's main selling points.

Proton says its infrastructure is based in Switzerland and that its servers used for the service are located in Switzerland, Germany or Norway. The company also says stored data is encrypted and that it cannot decrypt end-to-end encrypted user content.

Proton also emphasizes open-source software and independent security audits as part of its broader privacy approach.

Proton Drive Performance Has Also Improved

Privacy-focused encryption does not necessarily have to mean slow cloud storage.

In June 2026, Proton announced a cryptography update that it said could make Proton Drive uploads up to four times faster. The company said the update improved the efficiency of the encryption layer used by Drive's file operations.

This is important because encryption happens throughout the file-storage process, and improvements to cryptographic performance can directly affect how quickly uploads and downloads feel.

Is Proton Drive Worth Using?

Proton Drive is particularly attractive for users who put privacy and security ahead of simply getting the largest amount of free storage.

Its 5GB free plan makes it easy to try without paying for a subscription, while end-to-end encryption, secure sharing, photo backups and cross-platform support make it a capable cloud-storage option.

However, users with very large collections of videos, photos or other files may need a paid plan because 5GB can fill up quickly.

Final Verdict

Proton Drive is a strong option for anyone looking for private and secure cloud storage.

Its biggest advantage is its privacy-first design. End-to-end encryption helps ensure that stored files remain accessible only to the user and the people they intentionally share them with. The service also combines secure file storage with photo backups, file sharing and multi-device synchronization.

For basic personal storage, the 5GB free Proton Drive plan is worth trying. If privacy is a major concern and you need more storage, Proton's paid plans provide additional capacity and access to other Proton services.

Overall, Proton Drive is worth considering as an alternative to mainstream cloud storage, especially for users who want cloud convenience without giving up a strong focus on privacy.
