WhatsApp is introducing a new security alert that requires users to update their device’s operating system before they can log in to the messaging app. The change applies to both Android and iOS devices and aims to improve account security by encouraging users to install the latest available software updates.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp displays an alert when users try to access the app from a device running an outdated operating system. The alert instructs them to open their device settings and install the latest available update before continuing.

Users cannot skip this requirement, meaning they must update their device software to regain access to WhatsApp if the app blocks their login.
WhatsApp Introduces New Security Alert for Android and iPhone Users
The new requirement works through a server-side update. This means users do not need to install a new version of WhatsApp to receive the alert. Instead, the change comes from WhatsApp’s servers and applies to supported Android and iOS devices.
WhatsApp has not yet specified which operating system versions will trigger the login restriction. The rollout may also take time to reach all users.
The new measure highlights the importance of keeping smartphones updated. Operating system updates often include security patches that fix vulnerabilities and protect devices against potential attacks.
Why WhatsApp Wants Users to Update Their Devices
Outdated operating systems can expose devices to known security vulnerabilities. Cybercriminals may exploit these weaknesses to install malicious software, access sensitive information, or intercept data stored on affected devices.
Although WhatsApp offers security features to protect conversations and accounts, the overall security of the app also depends on the device it runs on.
By requiring users to install available operating system updates, WhatsApp aims to reduce risks associated with outdated software. The alert also helps users understand why keeping their devices updated is important for digital security.
WhatsApp Is Also Working on Other New Features
Alongside the security change, WhatsApp is developing and rolling out several other features for Android, iOS, iPad, and Mac.
On iOS, WhatsApp is introducing a refreshed video player with Apple’s Liquid Glass design. The updated interface features a translucent progress bar with rounded corners and a redesigned control bar. The new design is also reaching the iPad and Mac versions of the app.
WhatsApp is also testing a dedicated Contacts tab for Android. It will provide a central place to view contacts, identify people who are online, check birthday reminders, and invite new users. The feature will also let users sort contacts by activity or alphabetically, while respecting their existing privacy settings.
Another improvement allows Android users to play WhatsApp Status updates at double speed. Users can activate 2x playback by pressing and holding the right side of the screen. The faster playback remains active only while they hold the screen.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp is testing a redesigned navigation experience for iOS chats. The new interface adds a shortcut to access useful conversation options without opening the chat information screen.
The company is also testing a redesigned Settings interface on iOS. The proposed layout separates frequently used options from other settings, making it easier for users to find features related to privacy, notifications, storage, linked devices, and parental controls.
What Users Should Do
WhatsApp users should regularly check their smartphone settings for available operating system updates. Installing these updates can help protect their devices from known security threats and maintain compatibility with apps.
For now, WhatsApp has not confirmed the exact operating system versions that will trigger the new login restriction. Users who receive the alert should follow its instructions and install the latest update available for their device.
